You can go Irish for a cause this weekend by attending a fundraiser for the Saint Mary’s Catholic High School band that’ll help fund their March 2013 performance at the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Ennis, Ireland. The event runs from 2-5pm Sun, Aug. 19 at Tim Finnegan’s Irish Restaurant & Pub — and features Jeff Sullivan’s guitar and Irish ballads, complimentary food and a silent auction. I’m told the pub’s co-owner hails from a neighborhood just 20 miles from Ennis, so the cause truly hits home.
Folks can get the Celtic vibe in Prescott from 10am-5pm Sat, Aug. 18 at the 2nd annual “Prescott Celtic Music Festival” taking place at Watson Lake Park. The festival features Celtic bands and bagpipers, Celtic food and drink, a silent auction and raffle, and tea room too.
You can go Irish with the new McClelland Irish Library at the Irish Cultural Center in Phoenix by purchasing an engraved entry stone or attending their “Grand Opening Celebration” on Sat, Sept. 29. The library plans to house an “extensive collection of Irish and Celtic books, manuscripts, paintings and photographs spanning from the classics to modern writers” plus an Irish geneological research center.
Expect a sea of green as the 3rd annual “Phoenix Sister Cities 5K Run and Family Walk” hits Arizona Falls in the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix on Sat, Nov. 10. The event normally benefits the Phoenix Sister Cities city committee, disability awareness program and youth ambassador exchange program, but this year it’ll benefit the St. Mary’s band trip too.
Artists age 19 and up with disabilities are invited to participate in the Phoenix Sister Cities “International Competition of Artists With Disabilities 2012,” which welcomes entries from artists living in Arizona or one of Phoenix’s nine Sister Cities — Calgary, Catania, Chengdu, Ennis, Grenoble, Hermosillo, Himeji, Ramat-Gan and Taipei. This year’s theme is “Hope Sees the Invisible and Achieves the Impossible” and entries are due by Oct. 5. An awards ceremony takes place Fri, Nov. 2 at Warehouse 1005 in Phoenix.
The Arizona Sister Cities 2012 State Conference takes place Oct. 19-20 in Phoenix. The Fri., Oct. 19 “Welcome Reception” takes place at the Wells Fargo History Museum and Sat., Oct. 20 conference sessions take place at the Wells Fargo Conference Center.
